Yahoo Sports Columnist Dan Wetzel joined the ISD Podcast on Friday morning.

Wetzel is an expert on the NCAA and has been writing and speaking about why the concept of amateurism in big-budget NCAA sports has been laughable for years, dating back to his coverage of the Ed O’Bannon Trial a decade ago, which challenged the NCAA’s ability to make money off of his likeness.

Wetzel offers his thoughts on what the coming Name Image Likeness legislation will mean for college sports and Notre Dame specifically while also addressing some of the unforeseen consequences that will come with it.

2:00: Wetzel talks about the O’Bannon trial and the NCAA’s response.

6:30: Wetzel offers a history lesson on the idea of amateurism dating back to the 1800s.

10:30: He talks about why he doesn’t believe the Name Image Likeness proposal will only serve to get the rich richer, expanding on the idea in a recent column of his that it could even prevent schools like Alabama from stacking recruiting classes if other programs are able to peel off some of those prospects on the lower end of the top classes.

18:45: Wetzel explains why he thinks it will be a net-positive for Notre Dame given the Irish’s national appeal and NBC TV deal.

21:45: How much could a player like Trevor Lawrence stand to profit under the new rules? Wetzel highlights information from his Yahoo colleague Pete Thamel’s recent story on exactly that.

Why is social media going to play such a large role in this new world we’re entering?

27:30: O’Bannon’s trial was centered around the EA Sports video game. Does this mean the EA Sports video game is on its way back? Unfortunately, you may not like his answer on this one.

29:10: Will kids get cut of jersey sales?

30:00: Could kids go to a school sponsored by one apparel company and then sign their own deal with a competitive?

32:00: He also offers his thoughts on whether the 2020 college football season will be played, when and what it might look like. Could some schools or conferences decide to play while others don’t and what will that mean?

You won’t want to miss the podcast breaking down an extraordinary time for college athletics.

You can follow Wetzel on Twitter @DanWetzel and be sure to check out the Yahoo College Sports Podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts. In addition to the book, ‘Death To The BCS,’
