Things may seem like they happened pretty fast between Mitchell Evans‍ and Notre Dame, but in reality, the relationship between the Irish and the 2021 Ohio tight end started long before a scholarship offer was made a few weeks back.

Still, about a month after that offer was delivered, the 6-foot-7, 240-pound Evans has given the Irish his verbal commitment.

The Wadsworth High School athlete gives Notre Dame 13 total commits in the Class of 2021 and joins Cane Berrong to give the Irish a pair of tight ends.

He chose Notre Dame over offers from schools like Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Purdue, Florida State, Iowa and Duke among others. Evans is an interesting prospect. He has the kind of frame and athleticism that allows him to be used in multiple ways on the football field and in fact, will be playing quarterback for his high school squad this fall.

Notre Dame tight ends coach John McNulty had been evaluating and building a relationship with Evans for a while before the offer was extended. That put the Irish in a good position to get Evans on campus for an independent unofficial visit earlier this month.

“The program, the school, the history,” Evans said of his interest in Notre Dame prior to the visit. “There’s a rich history. The culture is amazing. Coach McNulty seems like a great coach, so does Coach (Tommy) Rees and Coach (Brian) Polian.

“They’re all great people. Being able to talk to Coach McNulty the past couple weeks has been really sick.”

Apparently, that was the final piece of the puzzle for Evans as he shut down the process and announced his commitment shortly afterward.
