Coach | Notre Dame An "Incredible Offer" For 2022 DE Wilfredo Aybar
Wilfredo Aybar already had some very impressive scholarship offers and the 2022 defensive end added another one on Monday afternoon, this one from Notre Dame.
“It’s an incredible offer,” Aybar’s head coach at Cheshire Academy, David Dykeman said afterward. “He’s really excited.
“Wilfredo is the complete package. He’s a student-athlete. He wants to go to a great school and he wants to play at a great level of football. And obviously, Notre Dame is one of the greatest combinations there is. He was real excited.”
Aybar attends the prestigious prep school in Connecticut, but calls Fall River, Mass., home.
This was supposed to be a pivotal period in the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder’s recruitment until the NCAA instituted a dead period in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
“For him, he’s doing this with his family and a lot of this is very new,” Dykeman explained. “We’re all going to work together to get him out and see places. He hasn’t been to a lot of places. He’s been to Penn State, but he hasn’t been to a lot of schools.
“We had a big spring planned, which obviously fell apart. Between spring and summer, the hope was he was going to see eight or 10 schools. Once we get that go-ahead, we’ll start to work through some of these options for him.”
Dykeman believes there’s a good chance South Bend ends up on the itinerary.
“I think so,” the coach said. “He was really excited about it. I think we’re going to talk more with the staff next week, but I certainly think it will be.”
Aybar also has offers from schools like Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State and Miami among several others.
“First of all, he’s got innate, freakish athletic ability,” Dykeman said. “I’ve heard this from multiple coaches, there are guys who have said, ‘This kid can play safety, outside linebacker, inside linebacker and defensive end.’
“He’s explosive. He’s got an incredibly high football IQ and he plays with an incredible motor. He goes non-stop. Turn on one of our game films and watch him play, watch him chase the ball. He’s an elite talent, that’s for sure.”
