Recruitment Rundown
As soon as Notre Dame came through with an official offer in November, this one was over. Moments after the offer, Johnson told ISD that the Irish had it “locked up.” He waited two days to make it public, but that was just a matter of logistics.
A one-time Cincinnati commit, Johnson’s relationship with Mickens went way back. As Power 5 programs started to show serious interest, Johnson backed off that Bearcat commitment in October and he eventually chose the Irish over schools like Michigan State, Iowa and Purdue.

“When he truly focuses on one thing, you’ve got to figure the sky’s the limit for him. He’s really good in Man coverage, good body control. He’s good with his hands. He’s good with his feet, cutting guys off, understanding positioning. He does a lot of things really well in Man coverage. We would blitz him off the corner some and do some different things with him. He’s really versatile defensively in what he can do too; whether that’s being a Zone coverage guy who could bait a guy into making a throw he shouldn’t or playing Man.”

It’s worth noting that he is considered a football junkie, whose father is a coach, and that he has not specialized at one position. Those things matter and I value them as an evaluator when assessing his potential.
There is no doubt Johnson is someone who can develop into a starter at cornerback or possibly in the slot at Notre Dame. He’s a Power 5-level athlete who deserves the uptick in offers he’s received. He’s not likely to be someone who competes early in his career for playing time, but he has a ton of room for growth with his game that could see him make moves for the Irish.
