Recruitment Rundown
The son of former NFL Pro Bowl offensive lineman John Alt simply rolled with the changes to the recruiting process this cycle. He never took issue with not being able to visit campuses or have in-person contact with coaches. He simply adjusted to the virtual style of recruiting and dug into all aspects of the schools he was looking at, especially Notre Dame. In addition to coaches, Alt had a Zoom with Adam Sargent.

He received offer from the Irish in May. A month later, he said he was close to making a decision and a month after that, he made it, committing to Notre Dame over schools like Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Missouri, Northwestern and Rutgers.

Totino-Grace Head Coach Jay Anderson
“Joe does come from a Catholic family and goes to a Catholic high school, so obviously, there’s that religious component, which I know is important to Joe. Joe is really serious about his academics too. The prospect of going to a place like Notre Dame, which is a prestigious university with a great academic program was icing on the cake for Joe. The family is excited, Joe’s excited. I’m happy for them.”

ISD Expert Jamie Uyeyama
His ceiling has everything to do with why Alt is a take in this class.

Even though he comes from a football family, this wasn’t a player who came out of the womb kick-sliding his way into a pass set. He’s learning as a blocker and the improvements he made stood out on film.

He’s a good athlete and a pretty good basketball player. He’s a perfect example of someone who has not specialized and because of that his game is going to grow a lot in the next few years.

Jeff Quinn had a former tight end at Central Michigan who converted to left tackle. His name was Joe Staley and all he did was start 181 games in the NFL, get selected to the Pro Bowl six times, and be named to the all-decade team. It’s a reach to project Alt to end up having a career like Staley, but Notre Dame wouldn’t have offered if they didn’t see that kind of potential.

Favorite ISD Quote
“It’s not going to be easy and you’ll have to work at it, but they’re there to help you. Everybody on the campus wants everyone else to succeed. It’s obviously a give-and-take, people are going to give you help and you give back. I really liked it.”
