Irish Sports Daily has confirmed through three sources that tight ends and special teams coach Scott Booker will not return to Notre Dame for the 2017 season.
Booker attended Kent State University where he played safety from 1999-2002. Kent State also is where he started his coaching career, where he was a Student Assistant in 2003 and then a Graduate Assistant in 2004.
The Golden Flashes hired Booker in 2005 as the defensive backs coach. In 2009, Booker made a move to Western Kentucky and then Notre Dame in 2010 as an intern.
Booker took over tight ends and special teams for the Irish in 2012.
Notre Dame took a significant step back in 2016, as the Irish kick coverage unit finished ranked 96th and then punt coverage finished 123rd in the country.
In terms of tight ends, the position has also struggled greatly the past two seasons. Durham Smythe led the unit with just nine catches in 2016.
As for a replacement, Notre Dame will have to look at Marty Biagi, who is currently on staff as a special teams analyst. Prior to Notre Dame, Biagi has coached defensive backs at South Dakota State and three seasons at Southern University as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. Southern had the nation’s top-ranked special teams unit in the country in 2014.
