Notre Dame signed three defensive ends from the 2021 cycle, but none of the three are considered blue-chip prospects. They landed their first defensive end commitment in the 2022 cycle and he is definitely in the blue-chip category of prospects.

Marcus Freeman has already made a big splash as a recruiter helping to secure a commitment from Tyson Ford‍. He has elite physical traits and has the talent to grow into an impact defender for the Irish.

Height: 6’5”

Weight: 250

Projected Position: Defensive end

ISD Grade: 93 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 92.7 (4-star)

What he does best:

No defensive lineman can be considered elite unless they can be great at rushing the passer. Ford has the potential to be that with his size and length combined with great twitch.

He can really move and has an outstanding first step, which is why he is able to make plays in the backfield.

As NFL draft analyst Josh Norris loves to say, disruption equals production and Ford is a disruptive player with his ability to penetrate into the backfield. He has very good lateral movement to get through gaps and blow up the running game.

Even when doubled, he can win with his motor. He flashes raw power with his hump move, which could be a devastating counter for him with his get off forcing tackles to open up against him.

What he needs to improve:

It all starts with the punch. He needs more hand violence and relies mostly on his athleticism over technique. He should be someone who can control the point of attack with his twitch and length, but doesn’t show that yet.

There are times he plays too high with his pad level. I want to see him play with more of a flat back consistently.

What’s his ceiling?

People his size aren’t supposed to move like he does. That’s exactly why his ceiling is so high. He has the raw talent to be a great player as a 5-technique defensive end that can kick inside as a 3-technique in sub-packages.

There’s a lot in his game that reminds me of Khalid Kareem. While he needs to develop in many areas, the tools are special if he puts in the work to develop his hands.

Championships are won with “dudes” like this on the defensive line. It’s a very significant addition to the class for the Irish.
