Houston Griffith Will Return to Notre Dame for Senior Year

January 22, 2021

Notre Dame safety Houston Griffith plans to remove his name from the Transfer Portal after submitting his name on January 6.

The news was initially reported by Yahoo's Pete Thamel and has since been independently confirmed by ISD.

The junior recorded 14 tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss in 12 games (two starts) during the 2020 season and could be in line for a significant role in 2021.

Brian Kelly and Marcus Freeman should get credit for retaining Griffith as he’ll be needed next fall.

Notre Dame will lose starting safety Shaun Crawford and the Chicago native will be the favorite to win the job opposite Kyle Hamilton. It's a job that means a great deal to Griffith as the local product wants to see the Irish keep winning on Saturday.

"Being a Chicago kid, you know so much about Notre Dame football," Griffth said in September. "To be able to have that home field advantage and playing big at home and getting the 20th win, it means a lot to the football team. Looking forward to bringing more wins to this University."

As a sophomore in 2019, Griffith played in all 13 games and made five tackles and one pass breakup.

In 2018, Griffith started his Notre Dame career at nickelback and totaled 14 tackles with two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry.

As of 10:30 am on Friday, Griffith's name was still listed in the portal.
