For Gene Robinson III, it’s easy to understand why so many colleges are offering Kody Jones‍.

“As a player, he checks all the boxes; his instincts, his speed, his knowledge of the game,” the Germantown High School head coach says of the 2022 Tennessee athlete.

Last month, Notre Dame joined a group of offers that includes Tennessee, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Michigan, Penn State and Oregon among several others.

“And just his mentality. He started day one as a freshman. He's been playing a lot of high school football. So, I think he's really instinctive, but his speed obviously sets some apart on the high school level.”

The 6-foot, 180-pounder plays all over the place for Robinson, but is being recruited as a cornerback.

“Obviously for us, he plays all over the field,” says Robinson. “He'll be in the backfield, he'll play receiver, slot, X and defensive back, but all the schools are recruiting him for defensive back.”

Off the field, Robinson says Jones has been raised properly.

“Man, he's a great overall kid,” the coach says. “He's a leader. He's a Notre Dame type of player, for sure.”

Robinson isn’t sure what Jones’ next steps in terms of recruiting would be with everything in limbo since a dead period was instituted last March.

But, the offer from Notre Dame was one that had Jones fired up, according to his coach.

“I would say he was excited,” says Robinson. “I coached Donte Vaughn, who recently graduated from Notre Dame and plays with the Chargers now. So, we had that conversation and we were just talking about Donte and Donte’s experience.

“So, he was really excited. I often compare those guys.”
