2022 Chantilly (Va.) defensive end Aiden Gobaira‍ made his way to South Bend earlier this week and it didn’t take long for him to decide it was the place for him.

The ISD four-star prospect committed to Notre Dame on Friday afternoon on a Zoom call with Brian Kelly, Mike Elston and Marcus Freeman.

"Coach Elston probably knew I was going to commit, but when I officially said it, they were all really excited," Gobaira told ISD. "I was super excited. They were ecstatic and jumping for joy. They were screaming. It was great."

Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech were stiff competition for the Irish staff, but the 6-foot-5, 235-pounder always held Notre Dame in higher regard than people knew.

"Notre Dame has always been a top school of mine," explained Gobaira. "Honestly, it was probably always my No. 1. Just seeing the campus and the place I could possibly go to school was amazing."

Why Notre Dame? It's simple. The Virginia native was looking for a place to develop him academically and athletically.

"Now that I will be going to school there, I know I made the right decision from the feel of campus and the education I'll be getting there is insane," Gobaira said. "It's out of this world. The connections I'll make from going to school there will set me up for life without football.

"With football, I'll be set up for the best chance to go to the league if I desire. Coach Elston is a great teacher and the program is exactly what I was looking for."

Gobaira took a trip to Chicago during the visit and it was on the way there that he knew Notre Dame was where he wanted to further his future.

"It was in the car going to Chicago," Gobaira stated. "For some reason going to Chicago and having that place that sort of felt like home because I love New York. I go to New York like three or four times a year. Seeing Chicago being a small New York and having that location was the last piece for me. The location really just put it over the edge. It was perfect."

And yes, Gobaira's inner circle couldn't have been happier to see him decide to attend Notre Dame.

"My mom loved it," said Gobaira. "She was super excited. My coach was here when the Zoom happened. We already knew I was going to go to Notre Dame during the Zoom.

"When I told my coach and mom, they were all supportive and loved the decision."

Gobaira will join fellow defensive end Tyson Ford‍ and linebacker Nolan Ziegler‍ in Notre Dame’s 2022 defensive haul.

He’ll also start his junior season soon as the state of Virginia started high school practice this week.
