Long before Jaden Mickey‍ made his commitment to Notre Dame official, his coach at Corona Centennial High School felt the 2022 California cornerback would be a great fit for the Irish.

Matt Logan’s feelings certainly haven’t changed in the wake of Mickens’ commitment to Notre Dame last month.

“I think it's great,” Logan says. “I think he's the type of kid who would fit in anywhere, first of all. Obviously, he has highly academic achievements and has high academic goals. It's a great fit for him. Athletically, I think it's an incredible fit.

“For them to come in and extend an offer a little bit later than the other schools – he had a lot of really great schools that offered him – for them to close that gap tells us that he obviously had plenty of interest in them to begin with. I think academics plays a big part for him and the level of football. I think it's one of the few schools that is ranked in the top five in both.”

The 6-foot, 175-pounder chose Notre Dame over schools like Cal, Northwestern and Oregon among several others.

Logan calls him “an incredibly, incredibly competitive person.”

“One of the most competitive players I've ever coached,” he continues. “He hates losing a rep, let alone a series or a game. He's very vocal. He brings a lot of juice to the party and gets guys going.

“In the weight room, he's really strong for his body size. He'll grab some of the linemen's weights and start repping what they're repping and stuff like that and let them know about it too. He brings some fun to it for sure.”

Logan also coached former Notre Dame wide receiver Javon McKinley and is happy to be sending another player to South Bend and believes it says a lot about his program and his school.

“It means the type of kids that we get here are willing to come in and work their tails off both in the classroom and out of classroom to achieve the goals that they want to achieve. Everybody talks about football, but we're one of the top academic school as well. People don't realize that, but when you take a deeper look, you see all of the things Centennial has to offer besides football for kids to be successful.”
