The decision to leave Notre Dame likely wasn’t easy for the 6-foot-4, 309-pounder as his dream was to play for the Fighting Irish and Harry Hiestand gave Gibbons that opportunity on April 1st of 2015. Three days later, Gibbons committed to Notre Dame.
Gibbons was also bitten by the injury bug early in his career as he broke his foot twice and chose to have a procedure with a lengthy recovery done early in 2020 to allow him to be ready to go last fall.
The South Florida native played in 10 games in 2020 and made one start against Syracuse. Gibbons appeared in 28 games for the Irish after redshirting and earning Scout Team Player of the Year in 2017 for his intensity and competitiveness.
Gibbons will likely look for a home in the South to get his master’s degree and play his final two seasons as his grandfather recently had triple bypass surgery.
As a recruit, Gibbons held offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, South Carolina, South Florida and West Virginia.
