Cam Whitmore has plenty of big-time offers, but last month’s offer from Notre Dame had a little extra significance.

“My uncle went there when he played back in the day, Bob Whitmore,” the 6-foot-6, 215-pounder from Archbishop Spalding High School says. “So I was actually pretty happy that I could have a chance to go there and ball out and my last name is already in the rafters.”

Indeed, Bob Whitmore entered Notre Dame’s Ring of Honor in January of 2019. Bob Whitmore was at Notre Dame from 1966-69 and scored 1,580 points while grabbing 1,043 in three seasons with the Irish, back when freshmen were ineligible to play.

Cam Whitmore made the trip to South Bend for that ceremony.

“Even though it was kind of a bad time, it was very cold,” Whitmore remembers. “I liked the facility, the atmosphere is amazing too. I liked the atmosphere there, seems like a pretty good place to play.

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey informed the Maryland swingman of the offer during a phone call last month.

“He just said he liked the way I play and said I play like a man, so he offered me,” Whitmore says of Brey.

“Notre Dame's got a lot of history, the basketball program, Coach Brey is a good coach. I like his offense and the way they play. They move the ball around and get their guys open, you get the ball out and keep it moving. That's what I like.”

Whitmore is looking to return to South Bend for an official visit, possibly this summer or possibly this fall for a football game.

“I hear the football games are pretty good, pretty amazing,” he says.

He’s also looking at trips to Maryland, Georgetown and Wake Forest.

Whitmore expects to have a final decision sometime toward the end of the fall or in December.

His relationship with the coaching staff will be crucial to his choice.

“If me and the head coach get along very well, the coaching staff, like I can talk to them as if I'm talking to my dad. That's mainly it, a coach who has my best interest and wants me to be successful in life, not just on the court.”
