Walker Lyons‍ has heard plenty about Notre Dame from a family friend and the elite 2023 California tight end will get a chance to see it for himself when he visits for Irish Invasion next Sunday.

That family friend is one with which Irish fans are familiar.

“One of my very good family friends is Ian Book,” says Lyons, a 6-foot-5, 232-pounder from Folsom High School. “I'm making the trip out there really because of him and what he's told me about Notre Dame.

“He loves everything about it. He loves the feel of the campus, the coaches. I was like, 'I trust his judgment, so I might as well make the trip.'”

Lyons was initially invited by Notre Dame assistant coach Brian Polian and was already set to be in the Midwest to see Ohio State and Michigan that week as well.

“I hope to see campus, meet the coaches, see the facilities and see if it's really a place I could see myself in the future,” says Lyons, who has offers from schools like USC, Oregon, Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma among others.

Lyons said coaches like the versatility he brings to the position.

“I'm really a four-down tight end,” he says. “I can block in line, I can line up out wide as a receiver and run go balls or catch fades. I can really run routes at receiver and I can still block and run routes from the tight end spot as well with my size and mismatch ability.”

He said he’d be thrilled to add an offer from the Irish.

“It would mean a lot, especially playing tight end and what Notre Dame's history has been with the tight end position, so it'd mean a lot and I'd be super excited for it,” he says.

In addition to the Midwestern schools, Lyons is hoping to see USC, Oklahoma, Texas and Clemson next month.

He has a decent outline of what he’s looking for in a college.

“What I'm looking for in a school obviously is a good education first off and more so than just a good football school. So a good education, a good place that feels like home, a good place where the coaches want me to play there and a place that really feels like family.”
