Notre Dame Impresses Top 2023 OL Alex Birchmeier
Alex Birchmeier was only at Notre Dame for a day and a half this weekend.
And the 2023 Virginia offensive lineman was surrounded by several official visitors in the Class of 2022, but the Irish coaching staff paid so much attention to Birchmeier and his father that it was described as “humbling and overwhelming.”
“I thought Notre Dame was a great place,” the 6-foot-5, 285-pounder told Irish Sports Daily afterward. “I liked the coaches and the atmosphere there.”
The Broad Run High School standout got to spend plenty of time with Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn.
“He definitely has a lot of energy,” Birchmeier said of Quinn. “We went over some film and I got to know them better. It was awesome.”
Birchmeier was also schooled on what it’s like as a student-athlete in South Bend.
“I learned a lot about the dorms and the student life,” he said. “I liked it. It was actually cool learning about it.
“I'm not sure there's anything more I can learn.”
The Ashburn, Va., native has an impressive offer sheet that includes Notre Dame along with schools like Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Stanford among many others.
Prior to Notre Dame, Birchmeier made stops at Virginia Tech and Penn State and has one more on the docket.
“We're planning on going to Ohio State later this month,” he said.
There’s a chance Birchmeier could be ready to wrap up his recruitment this summer.
“I'm just waiting until I'm comfortable so I can make a decision,” he said.
One thing that is certain is that Notre Dame impressed him this weekend.
“I like it a lot. They're a great school.”
His father, Matt, has been to South Bend several times, but he too was extremely impressed.
“It was awesome. Unbelievable place. I don't think another school compares as far as what Notre Dame has going.”
