2022 Forward Dom Campbell Previews Notre Dame Official
The Notre Dame men’s basketball program has been strategic in its contact with Dom Campbell since offering the 2022 forward last month.
“It hasn't been too much,” Campbell told Irish Sports Daily. “I think they understand that I've got a lot of people trying to talk to me right now and they're giving me some space, which I really appreciate, but we've been talking probably once a week, just checking in here and there. So, it's been really good.”
That communication will increase in a major way starting today, when Campbell arrives for his official visit to Notre Dame.
“Hopefully, the campus is really beautiful,” Campbell said. “I haven't really seen pictures or anything like that.
“Hopefully, the facilities kind of take my breath away and then hopefully the coaches are really as good as they seem over the phone along with the basketball players. Hopefully I get to spend some time with them and get to know the guys a little bit.”
Irish head coach Mike Brey and assistant Ryan Humphrey have been leading up the 6-foot-8, 240-pounder’s recruitment.
“They see me as a versatile big who could come in and do really big things for them,” said Campbell, who attends Phillip Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and plays his travel ball with the Massachusetts-based Middlesex Magic.
“They see me as one of their top guys in the Class of 2022. So yeah, all good stuff.”
Brey just saw Campbell play at a New England Prep School Showcase this weekend.
“I had a really good game,” Campbell said of his performance in front of Brey. “I had five or six threes and we got the win in overtime against a good team. I played really good individually and we played really good as a team too, so I'm sure Coach was impressed with my performance.”
Campbell said Brey was a “really cool guy” the first time he spoke with him on the phone and is aware of the ties between his travel program and the Irish.
“I've heard a lot of good things about him from my coach,” Campbell said, referring to Middlesex Magic Director Mike Crotty.
“I know Pat Connaughton went there and also Cormac Ryan is there right now, so two Middlesex Magic guys have gone there, so I definitely had to give it a good look just off that and also the success that they've been having as a program as well.”
Campbell’s offer sheet also includes schools like Boston College, Penn State, Minnesota, South Carolina, Stanford and others, including a host of Ivy League schools.
Earlier this month, he took official visits to Stanford and Oklahoma.
“They were really good,” he said. “I had a good time there, both really beautiful campuses and really good coaching staffs too.”
This week’s trip is the last one he planned for this month. He expects to come out with a top five or six by the end of the summer with a decision likely to come sometime in the fall.
