Notre Dame has a new Director of Football Performance, as Matt Balis will takeover in South Bend for Paul Longo.

“It’s an honor and dream come true to be part of the Notre Dame football program,” said Balis. “I’m humbled by this opportunity and I’ll work hard everyday to give our players and program my absolute best.”

Head coach Brian Kelly added.

"Matt comes to Notre Dame with impeccable credentials and incredibly high praise from the likes of Urban Meyer, Mickey Marotti, Dan Mullen, Bob Diaco and Al Groh,” said Irish head coach Brian Kelly. “He’s already instituted a strength program built with a foundation that focuses on hard work, discipline and top-notch competition. Matt will demand the best from our players, not only in the weight room, but in many other areas within our program. I couldn’t be more excited to have him in place moving forward.”

Balis graduated Northern Illinois in ’96 and got his first collegiate job with Houston in 2001. From there he moved on to Utah as the Director of Strength and Conditioning in 2004 under head coach Urban Meyer and then Florida from 2005-06 with Meyer as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning.

Virginia, Mississippi State and most recently UConn were stops for Balis. At UConn, Balis actually coordinated the strength and conditioning program for all 24 athletic teams. During his stop at Utah, Balis was responsible for coordinating programs for the all 16 sports for the Utes.

Balis was named a finalist for the Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year by FootballScoop.com in 2010.
