Notre Dame made its first assistant coaching hire official this week as Brian Mason was named special teams coordinator.
It’s a position that sometimes gets glossed over until someone misses a kick, gives up a return or in Notre Dame’s situation last season, a muffed kickoff in the biggest game of the year. While I’m not sure Mason caused Chris Tyree to drop the kickoff, it was his special teams unit that recovered it.
