2024 RB Corey Smith Will Return to Notre Dame in June
2024 running back Corey Smith made his way to Notre Dame for the Blue-Gold Game in April, but the track has the attention of the Catholic Memorial (Wis.) star at the moment.
"I'm in the middle of track season right now,” Smith told ISD. “I'm running the 100, 200, 4x100 and 4x200."
The 6-foot, 175-pounder shows speed on his sophomore highlight and Smith isn’t satisfied with being fast. When track finishes, Smith will focus on improving his hips and his feet.
"I want to work on my footwork” stated Smith. “That's what I want to get right along with my hips."
Smith is also becoming one of the top backs in the Midwest and the early trip to Notre Dame might prove to be significant down the road.
In fact, it was eye-opening for Smith as he was able to see close to 300 former Notre Dame players return to campus and share their experiences with him.
"I liked how they had all the alumni there to tell us about the school and they told us how we would have a good future if we would go there,” explained Smith.
And yes, Smith was caught off guard by seeing Chase Claypool and others rolling around campus.
"It shocked me,” laughed Smith. “I didn't know they were going to be there. It shows Notre Dame makes you feel at home and want to come back to visit after college."
Notre Dame running backs coach Deland McCullough was able to spend time with Smith over the weekend, but then also showed up at Catholic Memorial soon after to check on the Wisconsin native.
"We have a real good relationship,” said Smith. “We had some good talks and we're getting to really know each other."
The relationship centers around more than football as McCullough has taken a genuine interest in Smith’s future outside of football.
"He's a real good person,” Smith stated. “He's not all about football. He likes to talk about life after football and what I'm going to do when football is done."
Smith will now plan out his summer schedule, but there is only one visit set as of now and it’s a multi-day trip to Notre Dame.
"I only have one visit set and that's to Notre Dame,” Smith said. “I think I'll get back to Wisconsin, but I'll be back at Notre Dame June 2-5th."
When it comes to his recruitment, Smith is still figuring out what he’s looking for in a program and getting time around the current team will be a big part of his next visit to Notre Dame.
"I'm looking for a place I feel comfortable and know I can be the best I can be at that school.”
