It’s not often Notre Dame goes to Brooklyn to recruit, but Chris O’Leary made the trip last week and offered 2024 Canarsie (N.Y.) safety Shamir Fredericks‍.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pounder admitted he was caught off guard with the offer as Notre Dame has been a school Fredericks has always kept an eye on.

“It was a surprise,” Fredericks told ISD. “Notre Dame is one of my dream schools, so it was a surprise to get the offer so early."

There aren’t many safeties that are 6-foot-4 and Fredericks has already been studying one of them in former Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton to learn how he can maximize his length and size.

"I watched his film a lot over the last year,” said Fredericks. “I'm being recruited as a free safety. I feel the most comfortable there too.

"My height with my speed - I can get to the hash to the sideline quick. I come downhill and tackle."

The Brooklyn native also knows where he needs to improve before his junior season and it starts in the weight room.

"I'm training and practicing, but other than that, I'm not doing too much,” stated Fredericks. “I've been focused on getting stronger."

Fredericks will hit the road to play in a few 7-on-7 tournaments at Maryland, Penn State, Temple, Stony Brook and UMass in the coming weeks and he hopes to get to Notre Dame as well.

On the visits, Fredericks hopes to get a feel for several parts of the program while also just seeing each program in-depth.

"Academics is a huge part of what I'm looking for in a school,” Fredericks said. “I need to have a connection with the coaches and I just have to like what the school has to offer."

Notre Dame seems to be in a good position to hit the marks Fredericks wants to see, but head coach Marcus Freeman could be an x-factor in his recruitment.

"I would love to play for Coach Freeman,” said Fredericks. “He's a great man and a great head coach from what I've seen so far, especially as a black head coach. I know there aren't many of those in college football, so it'd be great to play for him."

Offers: Akron, Bowling Green, UMass, Notre Dame, Penn State, Syracuse and Temple
