Link Jarrett Returning Home to Florida State

Jack Swarbrick saw Notre Dame make its first appearance in the College World Series last week and he will now be tasked with hiring a new head baseball coach. 

Link Jarrett will leave Notre Dame for Florida State to lead the Seminoles program following the firing of Mike Martin Jr., who was Jarrett’s former teammate and college roommate. 

“It has been an absolute privilege to represent Notre Dame which truly is one of the finest academic and athletic institutions in the country,” said Jarrett in a statement. “I want to thank Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbrick, Jody Sadler and the entire Notre Dame administration for all of their support during my time at Notre Dame. I want to thank all of our student-athletes for their tireless work ethic and dedication to our baseball program. Their accomplishments on and off the field are something I will cherish for the rest of my life. To the entire Notre Dame family and community, thank you for welcoming and supporting my family, you are truly first-class in every manner.

“I’m humbled to become the next Head Coach at Florida State. Having the opportunity to come home and lead this storied program is something I take great pride in. FSU is a special place to our family and I’m excited to be the next leader of Seminole Baseball. Our goals will be simple – to achieve on the field, in the classroom and embrace the FSU family and community. I know the expectations from our fans and we expect to compete for ACC and National Championships.”

Jarrett, a Tallahassee native, started at shortstop on three College World Series teams at Florida State (1991,1992 and 1994) and was named an All-American honors by NCBWA his final two years in the garnet and gold. Jarrett also holds two Florida State records for consecutive games played (235) and at-bats in a career (989). 

“I want our program to be a representation of how I feel about Notre Dame,” Jarrett said at his first press conference in 2019. “I want these guys to compete. I want them to have a chance to win championships and hopefully get this program to a point where we’re in regionals. That’s what I want.” 

Jarrett accomplished the unthinkable as he turned the Fighting Irish into one of college baseball’s best programs and took Notre Dame well beyond just making regionals.

Entering the 2022 College World Series, Notre Dame trailed only Tennessee in winning percentage since 2020 and the Irish held the top winning percentage in the ACC during the same time span. 

In 2021, Notre Dame won its first ACC regular-season title in baseball, which included winning 10 conference series with three sweeps and won the league by 4.5 games. The 25 ACC wins tied a program record for conference games as the Irish won 25 in 1990 as part of the Mid-Western Collegiate Conference. 

Notre Dame’s appearance in the 2021 NCAA Tournament was the first postseason trip for the Irish since 2015 and it was the first time the program hosted a regional since 2002. 

Jarrett finishes his time at Notre Dame with a record of 86-32 overall and 44-21 in the ACC.
