BREAKING | 2023 IN PG Markus Burton Commits to Notre Dame
It didn’t take long for 2023 Penn (Ind.) point guard Markus Burton to know where he wanted to commit as the Mishawaka native has committed to Notre Dame.
“I'm a hometown kid and Notre Dame is only 10 minutes away from me,” Burton told Irish Sports Daily earlier in the week. “It's a high-major school playing in ACC and they're going to be playing top competition night in and night out.”
Burton chose the Fighting Irish just three days after Mike Brey offered him during a visit to campus.
“He basically telling me how good of a player I was,” Burton said after being offered by the Irish. He wanted to wait until he saw me play against better competition.”
Brey got the chance to do just that, when he watched Burton at Peach Jam earlier this month.
“He saw me and fell in love with my game,” Burton said. “He said he really loved the way I played against top players.”
The 5-foot-10 guard blew up this summer as he dominated the AAU circuit for Mac Irvin Fire after a massive junior season.
Burton knows South Bend native and former Irish stars Demetrius Jackson and Blake Wesley as well as fellow local standout and current Irish hooper JR Konieczny. In fact, he talked with Jackson and Wesley the day he was offered.
“I think it's cool knowing that Notre Dame always has a history with South Bend guys, hometown guys,” he said. “I think it's just a cool thing that they offered me and they offered Demetrius and Blake and JR and all those kids.”
In 2021-2022, Burton took the Northern Indiana Conference (NIC) by storm as he averaged 27.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Burton set a Penn season record leading as he scored 734 points and now sits third all-time with 1,364 points.
Burton is the eighth player in Penn history to top the 1,000-point mark and will now chase Noah Applegate (2015-2019) career points record of 1,702 points.
For his efforts, Burton was named Most Valuable Player of the NIC last season.
