Dylan Edwards‍ is fast.

And when Notre Dame extended an offer to the 2023 Kansas running back, he didn’t waste any time checking it out.

And the one-time Kansas State commit moved quickly to jump on his new opportunity, announcing his commitment to the Irish on Saturday afternoon.

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound speedster gives Notre Dame 23 verbal commitments in its 2023 class.

Edwards initially visited South Bend last June, but didn’t receive an offer right away. In June, the 2021 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year announced his commitment to Kansas State, choosing his father’s alma mater over schools like Oklahoma, Nebraska, Oregon, Kentucky and Michigan State among others.

Notre Dame officially extended an offer to the Derby High School prospect last Wednesday. By Thursday morning, he was in South Bend for an unofficial visit and by Friday, he’d announced his decommitment from the Wildcats.

Technically, Edwards joins Washington’s Jayden Limar to give the Irish a pair of running back commits in the Class of 2023. But Edwards should probably be considered more of an athlete with the ability to play slot receiver and be a force in the return game.

Edwards rushed for 2,603 yards and 38 touchdowns as a junior last season, averaging 12.5 yards per carry.

“Dylan Edwards is the best player I’ve seen in person at the high school level,” Hutchinson High School head coach Mike Vernon said in the press release announcing Edwards as Gatorade Player of the Year.

“He’s very dangerous. I can’t wait for him to graduate.”

One source described Edwards’ speed as “elite wheels.”

“Dude can roll,” the same source added.

The Irish are continuing to pursue Missouri running back Jeremiyah Love as well as Massachusetts wide receiver Ronan Hanafin. Edwards is essentially a dynamic weapon Notre Dame felt was worth going after and eventually adding.
