Notre Dame receivers coach Chansi Stuckey likely knew he was going to offer 2023 Tennyson High School (Calif.) receiver Taeshaun Lyons‍, but he added some suspense as he got to know the 6-foot-2, 170-pounder over the last week.

“I didn’t know to expect it at all,” Lyons told ISD. “I had gotten in contact with them last week and we would talk every day. Coach Stuckey said they really wanted to get me down here and in the blue and gold and if it works out, then they would offer me.

“The next day he gave me a call and I talked to him, the head coach and the offensive coordinator. He said I passed the test and that they all liked me and I got the offer.”

It was a significant offer for Lyons as he was well aware of the opportunities Notre Dame can offer.

“The first thing for me, it was surprising,” stated Lyons. “I don’t know too many people who have gone to college, but I know two of them went to Notre Dame and they are people I looked up to growing up. So for me to have the opportunity to go there meant everything to me. I know I’m doing something right.”

One of those two people is Taylor Craft, who ran track at Notre Dame,  and is the daughter of Lyons’ former track coach.

The other is current Notre Dame cornerback TaRiq Bracy, who is Lyons’ cousin.

“I haven’t really asked him any in-depth questions about Notre Dame,” explained Lyons. “I never thought I’d be in this position, so I never really asked him. We talked and I ask him about his games and how things are going.

“When Notre Dame first started interest, I did hit him up and he said I would really like it. He told me about how he would show me around and the ropes when I take a visit. We just haven’t talked specifics, but I’m sure I’ll ask those questions.”

Bracy and Lyons are close and the three-star prospect remembers watching his cousin shine in high school.

“When we were young, we used to be in the same room playing video games,” laughed Lyons. “I used to go watch him dominate at Milpitas High and watch him win State Championships. He’s way older than me. I remember being young and watching him dominate his senior season.”

Lyons also knows Notre Dame has signed more than a few prospects from Northern California in recent years and that’s caught his attention.

“I don’t really know those guys, but I know they annually get people from California,” Lyons said. “If you’re willing to leave home, it must not be that bad. It does nothing but help.”

Notre Dame does have momentum, but Lyons is also taking his time with the recruiting process as he plans to take his remaining four official visits before a decision.

“Right now, I’m not really too deep into it,” Lyons explained. “Washington, Oregon, Utah and I like Arizona. I like Oregon State as well, but I have only taken one official visit and that was to Washington in June. I have a lot of schools looking at me going into the season and I plan on taking the remaining four official visits before I make my decision.

“I want to do it probably at the end of my season. Maybe once the season ends, then I’ll do it then or maybe even on Signing Day. I want to really sit back and know instead of just committing early.”

When could Lyons get to Notre Dame? Well, it’s likely he’ll be on campus in just over a month.

“We’re actually in the middle of it right now,” stated Lyons. “We’re trying to make it official, but I’m trying to set it up for Sept. 17th when they play Cal.”
