Notre Dame Names Six Captains for 2022 Season
Notre Dame will have a team full of leaders, but six names will be at the forefront as Bo Bauer, JD Bertrand, Avery Davis, Isaiah Foskey, Michael Mayer and Jarrett Patterson have been named captains for the 2022 season.
Davis and Patterson will be two-time captains and become the 24th and 25th players in program history to earn that honor twice. Patterson has been a staple in the program and on the offensive line as he’s started 34 of 37 career games in the blue and gold. Davis suffered his second ACL injury in the last year earlier this month, but his veteran presence is needed and wanted in the program as the Texas native might command the most respect in the Notre Dame locker room.
“You’re not going to find a guy that’s more respected than Avery Davis,” Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said following the injury. “You want to talk about heartbreak for a program, everybody has felt that for Avery. For him to fight through everything early in his career, to find a role, own that role, be voted a captain, tear his knee, decide to come back and then for it to happen again, you can’t ever justify it.
“There’s not a guy in this program that wouldn’t do anything for that kid. We’re going to love him and support him and be there for him.”
Foskey will get his chance to leave his mark on the Notre Dame program as he turned down the NFL in January to play his senior year in the blue and gold. The California native has played in 29 games with 13 starts and he’ll chase history in 2022. Foskey is just 9.5 sacks away from breaking Justin Tuck’s career sacks record at Notre Dame after recording 11 sacks in 2021, which was just 2.5 behind Tuck’s program record of 13.5 in 2003.
Bauer is one of Notre Dame’s most experienced players as he’s appeared in 51 games during his career. The Pennsylvania native has just one start to his name, but don’t let that fool you as Bauer enters 2022 with 111 career tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions, while also being known as the energy guy for the Irish.
Bertrand busted on the scene last fall as he led the Irish in tackles with 108, including seven tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks - all while playing with a severe wrist injury. The senior from Georgia has played in 28 career games and 13 have been starts.
Mayer enters this fall as Notre Dame’s best player as the junior has received All-American nods from just about every publication in the country. The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder has started 16 of 24 career games over his first two seasons and the production has been at a historic level. Mayer has recorded 113 receptions for 1,290 yards and nine scores over his career and he’ll be the focus of sophomore Tyler Buchner when things get rolling next weekend in Columbus.
