Post-Visit Update | 2023 Notre Dame DE Target Micheal Garner

Notre Dame hosted multiple 2023 commits for Saturday’s game against Stanford and one of the uncommitted visitors became a public commit when St. Louis running back Jeremiyah Love‍ made his announcement.

Virginia athlete Brandyn Hillman‍ is on an official visit and Wisconsin offensive line commit Christopher Terek‍ is one visitor Irish fans are paying close attention to.

But there was another 2023 visitor who flew a bit under the radar coming into the weekend – and has been flying under the radar from a recruiting perspective for months.

But that seems like it’s about to change.

During the spring, Illinois defensive lineman Micheal Garner‍ picked up a host of offers from schools like Central Michigan, Akron, Miami-Ohio, Navy and others.

But since the start of his senior at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, Garner has been garnered attention from multiple Power 5 schools, including Notre Dame.

Irish defensive line coach Al Washington was at his school earlier this fall and stayed to watch Garner play in person that night. After getting a chance to see the 6-foot-7, 235-pounder in person, Washington extended an invitation to come down for the Stanford game.

Garner told ISD it was probably the best visit he’s ever been on.

He loved the energy from the fans inside the stadium and loved seeing Washington’s energy in person.

By chance, Garner also had the opportunity to speak with Notre Dame defensive line legend Bryant Young, who was in town for a recruiting visit with his own son. Young (pictured above with Garner) also attended Bloom High School and talked with Garner about his time in South Bend as well as tips on playing the game.

Garner didn’t get to speak with head coach Marcus Freeman, but that should happen virtually later this week and he’s already planning to return for an official visit this fall.

Garner isn’t going to get ahead of himself with regard to a potential offer from the Irish, but if one were to come, they’d definitely be under serious consideration.

Illinois, Iowa and Iowa State are among the other Power-5 schools that have reached out to Garner over the last couple months.
