Junior Day Preview With Updates On Jones, Gervin, Hawkins, Lenzy, Gant & More

February 10, 2017

Fridays at Irish Sports Daily are reserved for ISD Intel, our weekly peek behind the scenes of Notre Dame Football and Irish recruiting efforts.

Junior Day Weekend is here, well at least the first Junior Day Weekend is here. If the Irish do what they’ve done in years past, this smaller Junior Day will be followed by a larger one during the spring.

This week’s Intel focuses – almost exclusively – on Notre Dame’s first major recruiting event for the Class of 2018. The Irish are scheduled to host all six current 2018 commits along with a half-dozen uncommitted prospects, who are top targets, and we have updates on virtually all of them.

Find out why Junior Day will actually be Junior Weekend for Illinois wide receiver Micah Jones.

Hear about how Ohio defensive lineman Aeneas Hawkins’ pedigree has helped him become a national recruit.

Michigan defensive back Kalon Gervin (pictured) just got offered by the Irish on Monday, but the commits have been on him way longer than that. Linebacker pledge Ovie Oghoufo, who will be bringing Gervin down to South Bend this weekend, explains why.

Ohio linebacker Dallas Gant could fill a number of roles in college and we hear what those roles could be in Mike Elko’s scheme.

Find out about Oregon athlete Braden Lenzy’s ties to the Midwest and how he proved himself to his high school coaching staff by stepping up as a freshman against a future BCS signal-caller.

We also have notes on Ohio defensive lineman Tyreke Smith, who had to cancel his visit, and Ohio offensive lineman John Dirksen, who was still looking into making the trip the last we heard.

We do have one piece of team information on why today’s workout with new strength coach Matt Balis could end up being like something they’ve never seen before.

Get all of that in this week’s ISD Intel.
