Film Don't Lie | CB Karson Hobbs

Notre Dame is playing some really good ball at the corner position and people are starting to notice. Karson Hobbs‍ has and he’s the latest addition to Notre Dame’s 2024 class.

It doesn’t hurt that he grew up a fan of the Irish as well, but plenty of guys list Notre Dame as a dream school who don’t have the tools to excel at high-level. Hobbs is one of those dreamers that I believe has what it takes to be very good at the college level. I really like this pickup for the Irish.

Height: 6’1”

Weight: 190

Projected Position: Cornerback

ISD Grade: 90 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 86.0 (3-star)

What he does best:

He’s a fluid athlete who can flip his hips and run well. He has legitimate man coverage skills and can play in press or off.

Hobbs plays with a good understanding of leverage with his coverage. He knows where his help is and has the short area quickness to close even when he might not be in an ideal position to make a play.

He plays with good vision and instincts in zone coverage. Right near the top of the list for a defensive back is if he can find the football and Hobbs checks that box.

What he needs to improve:

He doesn’t use his hands well. Hobbs has the kind of size and length that ideal for the position, but he isn’t physical yet. That can come with time and technique combined with getting stronger.

What’s his ceiling?

The defensive backs coach that he committed to at South Carolina, Torrian Gray, was the long time DB coach at Virginia Tech when they were “DBU” and he’s been a great evaluator of talent. Mike Mickens has been very good as well. They clearly see a lot of potential with Dobbs and I do as well.

I’m a big believer in corners needing specific traits in order to succeed at the college level and I see those traits with Hobbs. I know I’m higher on him than his consensus ranking at the moment, but it’s more of a bet on the pieces of the puzzle he already shows that can translate well going forward.

I want to see more junior film, but to me he looks like someone who can be a future starter who is scheme versatile.

Who he could be:

He’s not as tall, but he reminds me of former Minnesota CB Benjamin St. Juste
