In the end, the opportunity was just too great to turn down.

Not long after announcing his decommitment from South Carolina on Tuesday night, Karson Hobbs‍ was giving his verbal commitment to his dream school, Notre Dame.

“They were extremely excited,” the Archbishop Moeller High School star told Irish Sports Daily on of the Notre Dame coaches’ reactions on Tuesday night.

“They said it was a true blessing to have me as part of the family. They’re just ready.”

Even though Hobbs and his father have been longtime Irish fans, this decision was about much more than choosing the team the 2024 Ohio cornerback grew up rooting for.

“I just really felt it was going to be deeper than football,” Hobbs said.

“I felt like if I ever got hurt in my career and didn’t end up going to the NFL, at the end of the day Notre Dame would be in my best interest for the rest of my life.”

Hobbs offered his commitment to the Gamecocks back in July, but he was invited to visit Notre Dame for the Cal game in September. He left with an offer from the Irish and a huge decision to make.

He returned to South Bend for Notre Dame’s win over #4 Clemson on Saturday night and within a couple of days had his decision.

“The Clemson win and the fact that Karson got to get in the locker room and be a part of the celebration had a huge part to do with his decision,” his father, Dan said.

“The storming of the field, which we have video of, had a huge part to do with the decision.”

Mike Mickens was also a major part.

“He probably played the biggest role; him and Chad Bowden,” Hobbs said of the Irish’s cornerbacks coach and Notre Dame’s Director of Recruiting, respectively.

Hobbs gave credit to Mickens for speaking to him virtually every day.

“He just built such a great relationship so fast,” he continued. “For my dream school to have somebody really show how much they care about you. It’s more than football; just worrying about how you’re doing in life in general, it’s different. I really like that about him.”

Not surprisingly, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman played a huge role as well.

“He’s a great guy, just an overall great guy,” Hobbs said. “He’s one of the first black head coaches there, so I thought that was pretty spectacular.

“I thought, ‘Just go play for my dream school and go play for a diverse program.’”

His father agreed with that thought process.

“We’re Irish for life and let’s go Irish!”
