Notre Dame has their quarterback in 2023. They got a good one in 4-star prospect Kenny Minchey‍.

The former Pitt commitment has been a favorite of mine for a while, but he hasn’t generated a ton of buzz this season after missing time due to injury. The film that he has put out there as a junior and the games he’s played this year show there is plenty of reason to be excited about him as a prospect.

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 205

Projected Position: Quarterback

ISD Grade: 92 (4-star)

National Average Grade: 91.3 (4-star)

What he does best:

Minchey has the best touch that I’ve seen from any quarterback prospect this class. He knows how to put it in the right spot with the right velocity like this drop in the bucket down the sideline.

He throws the ball with anticipation. The ball gets out when it needs to get out. That’s why there are so many throws with him releasing it at the top of his drop. He doesn’t need to see the receiver running free before he lets the ball go. He knows that the receiver is getting open and it puts it in the perfect spot.

He doesn’t have a cannon, but he can fit the ball with zip into tight windows.

Being able to make throws in rhythm on RPOs is critical in today’s college football and there are numerous examples of Minchey doing that as well.

Minchey shows good awareness in the pocket and can make throws when he gets off of his original spot because he stays balanced with his body.

While not a dual-threat, he can be an option as a runner and shows the ability to escape the rush.

The biggest thing for me with Minchey is accuracy. He gives his receivers chances for plays after the catch because of timing and ball placement. He also knows that he needs to make the ball as catchable as possible like on this back shoulder throw to the slot. If he puts this inside, it’s a pick or the receiver is getting lit up.

What he needs to improve:

He can improvise and make plays outside of the framework of the play, but does tend to take some risks that could come back and bite him. Some of those throws are getting picked in college.

What’s his ceiling?

I think Minchey is one of the most accurate passers in the recruiting class and his touch is elite. If he had played his full senior season, I think he could have blown up, but fell a bit under the radar because of that.

That’s to the benefit of Notre Dame who landed a quarterback who I think has the tools to do everything they ask in their offense.

This isn’t nearly a take to fill a spot. Minchey has the potential to be a starter for the Irish and with the right talent around him, one of the best efficient passers in college football.
