We can confirm the report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel that Drew Pyne intends to enter his name into the transfer portal after starting 10 games for the Irish this fall.

Pyne will have three years of eligibility remaining after redshirting last season.

“One of my proudest honors is to have been a student-athletes at the University of Notre Dame,” Pyn said in a statement. “I have been blessed to be among great coaches and teachers and play with teammates I consider brothers. Our bonds will be lifelong.

“Now it’s time for me to take on a new challenge, and I will be entering the Transfer Portal. While I’m excited about what lies ahead, I want to thank the entire Notre Dame community for their support. I am forever grateful for the experience and memories.”

After losing a preseason quarterback competition to Tyler Buchner, Pyne took over in the second game of the season when Buchner went down with a season-ending injury.

Pyne finished the season 164-254 for 2,021 passing yards with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 47 carries while leading the Irish to an 8-2 record.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells us that Pyne will not play in the Irish’s upcoming bowl game.

It seems likely Notre Dame will work the transfer portal in search of adding a quarterback to the roster for the 2023 season.

Buchner is expected to be back and head coach Marcus Freeman even hinted that he could be ready in time for the Irish’s bowl game. Freshman quarterback Steve Angeli served as the backup once Buchner went down against Marshall.

Last month, the Irish received a commitment from 2023 Tennessee quarterback Kenny Minchey‍.
