Notre Dame tight end Cane Berrong has entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal following his sophomore season in South Bend.

Statement by Berrong:

"Having the opportunity to come to the University of Notre Dame has truly been a dream come true. Over the past several weeks I have had a chance to reflect on just how special of a school this and what makes this decision so difficult.

First and foremost, I want to thank Notre Dame for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to compete for such a prestigious program. I want to thank my coaches for pushing me to become a better player and fostering an environment of strong character. I want to thank the training staff and team doctors for helping me fully recover from my injury and allowing me to compete at a high level.

I will always cherish the friendships with my brothers on the field and the friends I have made in the student body. The connections I have made here will last a lifetime and I will always consider myself a member of the Irish.

With that said, I'm entering the Transfer Portal with three years of eligibility and looking for a fresh start to further my football and academic career."

The 6-foot-3, 243-pounder figured to compete for a role in spring as Michael Mayer heads to the NFL with Kevin Bauman and Eli Raridon sidelined with ACL injuries.

Berrong, who tore his ACL in the fall of 2021, only played in the Boston College game this fall after playing in three games as a true freshman. The Georgia native got special teams work against Wisconsin and Cincinnati before getting offensive snaps at Virginia Tech in 2021.

Former Notre Dame tight ends coach John McNulty admitted Berrong surprised him a year ago as he didn’t have plans to play him as a freshman.

“(Brian) Polian was starting to put him on more special teams and he was starting to grow on me every time,” McNulty said last December. “Everything he does, he does well. You just have to give him a little more.

“The injury was unfortunate. He was kind of not going to play, but then he was gaining more and more and he was going to play more and more and then all of the sudden, he's out. I think it goes through the spring and hopefully, when he gets back to camp next year, he's able to hit the ground where he left off."

Berrong chose Notre Dame over the likes of Georgia, LSU, Michigan, NC State and Penn State in July of 2019 shortly after a camp performance in South Bend.
