BREAKING | Notre Dame Lands WR Transfer Kaleb Smith

December 21, 2022

A couple weeks after landing a commitment from wide receiver Kaleb Smith, Notre Dame did it again, landing a commitment from wide receiver Kaleb Smith.

After getting a pledge from 2023 Texas wideout Kaleb Smith on Dec. 1st, the Irish secured a pledge from Virginia Tech wide receiver transfer Kaleb Smith today.

“I feel like it reaches all of the goals and checks all of the boxes I was looking for coming into the process,” Smith told Irish Sports Daily prior to his announcement.

The former Hokie took an official visit to South Bend this past weekend and was impressed enough to shut down the process, bypassing potential opportunities at UCLA, Georgia Tech and USC.

Wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey made a huge impact on Smith’s decision along with a meeting with head coach Marcus Freeman.

“Being able to sit in (Freeman’s) office and talk with him and get face to face and go through some of the things I was looking for, it was refreshing to hear,” Smith said. “He’s excited for me. He expressed that they want me to come.”

Smith also enjoyed South Bend and the surrounding areas.

“I always heard there wasn’t much going on in South Bend, but I was impressed," he said. “I think it’s a step-up town-wise from Blacksburg.

“It’s similar in a way, where it’s a college town and college environment and there’s fans all around, but all of the different options to eat; Coach Stuck to me around. We drove around Granger and Mishawaka and then downtown. I loved it.”

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder led the Hokies with 37 receptions for 674 yards and three touchdowns this past season after catching 20 for 260 yards and two touchdowns in 2021.

Smith told ISD he was looking for a place to help him boost his NFL Draft stock while also having the opportunity to play in big games and compete for a national championship.

When Smith’s name popped up in the portal, Irish wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey pounced quickly; reaching out to Smith and ultimately flying down to Pittsburgh for an in-person meeting leading up to the official visit.
