Kaleb Smith had some pretty high expectations coming into his official visit to Notre Dame this past weekend, but the Virginia Tech wide receiver transfer had them surpassed.

“I had a blast,” Smith told Irish Sports Daily following that trip. “It was everything that I expected it to be and more.”

Smith got to watch a pair of Irish practices, to sit in on team meetings and to see the facilities.

“I really liked it,” he said. “I can see myself there.”

Smith is looking to finish at a program that can help boost his NFL Draft stock and liked what he saw from the Irish’s practices.

“The level of competition is something that I feel is unmatched and would be a step up for me,” he said. “It’s kind of why I decided to go through this process.”

Notre Dame wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey has made a major impression as well.

“I love Coach Stuck,” he said. “The atmosphere in his position room is something I think I could benefit from. He’s big on details and as a receiver, you’ve got to be locked in on those details. That’s what is going to get you to the next level.”

He called his meeting with head coach Marcus Freeman “awesome.”

One of Smith’s former receivers coaches at Virginia Tech, Jafar Williams, coached with Freeman at Purdue.

“We had a little connection there,” Smith said. “He obviously called my position coach and he had nothing but good words to say for me.”

Smith has also heard from schools like USC, UCLA and Georgia Tech since entering the portal. Initially, he was looking at dates for other visits, but it sounds like he may have a final decision quite soon.

“I don’t necessarily have a timeline, but I would expect it to be by this Wednesday.”
