BREAKING | QB Sam Hartman Transferring to Notre Dame
Notre Dame has made a significant move in terms of getting back to the College Football Playoff as Wake Forest grad transfer quarterback Sam Hartman will play his final year of football in South Bend.
The 6-foot-1, 208-pounder immediately brings experience to a quarterback room that desperately needs seasoning as sophomore Tyler Buchner is the only signal-caller to have meaningful game experience. Both quarterbacks will be involved in a competition moving forward, which is a positive for Buchner and Hartman moving forward.
Hartman not only has in-game experience as he’s played in 48 games (45 starts), but he has production unmatched at the college level as he’ll bring 12,967 career passing yards and 110 passing touchdowns to Notre Dame.
In 2022, Hartman finished 270-of-428 for 3,701 yards, 38 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, which included the highest completion percentage of his career at 63 percent.
The Charlotte native also rushed for 855 yards and 17 touchdowns during his time at Wake Forest.
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman made it clear the staff wasn’t going to bring in just any quarterback into the program as fit was important as anything else.
“Again, it has to be the right fit,” explained Freeman. “They have to not just enhance our roster athletically but they have to fit into the Notre Dame locker room. That's something we'll continue to investigate.”
Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees has gone to the portal to land a graduate transfer before as Jack Coan played in his final season in the blue and gold.
Rees echoed Freeman’s statements as fit is a quality he emphasized when evaluating transfer quarterbacks.
“I think you want it to be the right person,” explained Rees. “The person is so important. Our culture here is very strong. We want to start with character and we want to make sure that’s intact. We want someone that can add value in the room and be a great addition to what we have from the top down.”
Hartman’s 110 passing touchdowns is an ACC record, while he holds the Wake Forest career records for completions, attempts, touchdowns and total yards. In addition to that, Hartman has thrown for 21 career 300-yard games, which is also the most in ACC history and has passed for a touchdown in 33 consecutive games.
