History says Notre Dame gets its first ACC win of the year on Tuesday as Georgia Tech comes to South Bend for a Tuesday clash. The Yellow Jackets haven’t won in South Bend since 1990 and Josh Pastner’s squad enters the game at just 1-4.

Yes, this will be a mid-January ACC game where the teams have a combined conference record of 1-9.

The good news for Notre Dame is Georgia Tech is 1-3 on the road this season and 2-7 when failing to score 70 points. It’s relevant considering opponents average 69.3 ppg against the Irish - but the bad news is Mike Brey’s club is also averaging 69.3 ppg.

Tuesday will come down to Notre Dame’s defense. The Yellow Jackets have just one player averaging in double figures (Miles Kelly 14.6 ppg), so it’s not like the Irish will face an offensive juggernaut such as North Carolina.

The key to Notre Dame’s defense will be what Brey can get from his posts. Freshman Ven-Allen Lubin will be out with an ankle injury, so that leaves Nate Laszewski, Matt Zona and freshman Dom Campbell.

Zona and Campbell combined to play 15 minutes during Saturday’s loss to the Tar Heels and scored a combined five points and only Campbell registered a rebound. Campbell provided an edge when he entered the game with his physical play, but he also fouled out in just eight minutes. Now, some of that was to be overly physical on Armando Bacot, so tonight might be a more accurate representation of what Brey can possibly get out of his freshman big.

Notre Dame will also need to show some fight. Since Notre Dame’s 70-52 win over Michigan State on November 30th, the Irish have won just two games: Boston University and Jacksonville. Notre Dame has not beaten a big school since the Spartans as they have lost to Syracuse, Marquette, Georgia, Florida State, Miami, Boston College and North Carolina.

If the Irish show life, there is a chance they can attempt to salvage the season with games against Syracuse, Florida State, Boston College, NC State, Louisville, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech on the horizon.
