2024 Notre Dame OL Commit Peter Jones Recaps Latest Trip to South Bend
2024 Notre Dame offensive line commit Peter Jones made it a priority to get back to campus over the weekend, but it wasn’t necessarily because he needed to see something from the school or staff.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder wanted to return to Notre Dame so he could get to know his future teammates as six other 2024 commits were in South Bend for Junior Day.
“It was really awesome to get back to campus,” Jones told ISD. “This is the first time all of us commits have been there all together. Just building and making these relationships that are going to last our college years and beyond was really special.”
Jones also got plenty of time with his future offensive line coach Harry Hiestand. The Malvern Prep (Pa.) star wasn’t looking for a pitch on why Notre Dame was the right choice, but he wanted to learn and Hiestand made sure he did as the two spent time watching film.
“Coach Hiestand’s message was just to take everything in and that you’re going to blink and then you’ll be moving in,” explained Jones. “Keep working and keep looking to get better and improve in any way I can.
“We spent our time together watching film of both my season and Notre Dame’s season focusing on technique, position and game scenarios.”
Notre Dame showed Jones a few piece of the program he hadn’t seen, which impressed him even more.
“I had heard a lot about the resources the players have with nutrition and food, but after I had my meeting with the team nutritionist Alexa Appelman (Associate Director of Sports Nutrition), I was kind of blown away,” Jones said. “That was my first opportunity to meet with her.
“Then while talking to Coach (Chris) Watt, just hearing about some of the housing opportunities and how the early enrollment guys can fly back for graduation and prom. I thought that was great.”
In addition to time with Hiestand and Tommy Rees, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman made sure to have a conversation with Jones.
“Coach Freeman’s message was very similar to Coach Hiestand’s and Coach Rees’, which was to keep working and strive to be the kind of men that represent and describe Notre Dame,” Jones explained. “Coach Freeman also mentioned a lot about how time is flying by and that he’s super excited for us all to be there with him.”
The visit was about fun and building bonds, but Notre Dame’s staff made sure to give Jones a little work to do while on campus.
Recruit 2024 offensive lineman Styles Prescod.
“That was my assignment,” said Jones. “Coach Hiestand said he really liked Styles and he wanted me to spend the day talking and getting a feel from him. I didn’t really have too much of a message. Just making sure he knows that he’s a really good fit for us and that he can join this amazing opportunity. Also just learning more about him I think it really important. Who knows, maybe we’ll see him make a decision soon.”
