Notre Dame basketball got an important win for the program last Saturday and then headed into a much-needed bye week. Sure, many of the issues are self-created, but a week on the practice floor and rest is exactly what the doctor ordered following the last two weeks as the Irish simply needed to regroup.

“This group has always come in and worked,” Brey said. “We scrimmaged a bit in the arena. We made it like a game day and got into a little more, but you’re not practicing long. You’re not going two hours. You’re not going 90 minutes. You’re moving and trying to be a little smart about contact so you can keep bodies around.”

Brey’s team will welcome Wake Forest to Purcell Pavilion on Saturday and while the Demon Deacons have lost four in a row, Notre Dame knows they’ll face a team fighting for its NCAA Tournament life, but the Irish will be without freshman forward Ven-Allen Lubin for a second straight game.

“I don’t think Ven will be available on Saturday,” stated Brey. “There’s improvement, but I don’t think he can play. I like what Dom gave us the other day. Let’s get him in there and play him. Zona could be our next guy.

“It’s actually a tendon kind of near the foot. It’s ankle, but he just keeps tweaking it. Eventually, he needs a month of rest after this season. It’s almost like you look at him on Monday and see where he’s at.”

Wake Forest might be on a four-game losing streak, but the last three losses (Duke, NC State and Pitt) have all been by two points. Sixth-year guard Tyree Appleby leads the Demon Deacons in scoring at 18.1 ppg. Appleby, who played at Cleveland State and Florida, can score from the outside, but also attack the rim, so Notre Dame’s guards will have all they want and more.

Junior big man Andrew Carr is also a name to watch as he’s averaging 11.9 ppg and 6.3 rpg. The 6-foot-10 forward played last year at Delaware for former Notre Dame assistant Martin Inglesby.

“They’re really good,” said Brey. “The game there last year was a great game. It was just two teams putting the ball in the basket and really good offense. We can maybe slow it, but we have to score. People have scored against them, so I’m hopeful we can get into an offensive rhythm.”
