Coach | 2024 Notre Dame CB Target Ify Obidegwu "A Sunday Guy"
Ask Messay Hailemariam what he can say about Ify Obidegwu and the St. Frances Academy head coach makes it clear he can say plenty about the 2024 Maryland cornerback.
“What can't you say about Ify?” Hailemariam starts. “Size, length, athleticism, aggressiveness. Very quiet, but what he does on the field is priceless.
“He's a Sunday guy. His IQ is getting better every day, so his upside is ridiculous. Coach (Al) Golden and a lot of schools see that too. He's a national recruit on a high level.”
Golden certainly does see that which is why the Notre Dame defensive coordinator extended an offer to Obidegwu last week.
St. Frances defensive coordinator Justin Winters says Obidegwu have up only four or five catches the entire season.
“He is an eraser,” says Winters. “We put him on the backside and we don't even need to look over there. We keep him backside and he does what he does.
“The first thing is he has a seven-foot wingspan. His arms touch his knees when he is standing straight up. God blessed him with all the physical attributes to be a first-round corner. He is quiet, nothing phases him. He's just a big-time football player. He's developed into the best corner I've seen at this school and we've had a lot.”
Just prior to receiving the offer from the Irish, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder announced a Top 7 that included Alabama, Maryland, Oregon, Michigan, USC, Tennessee and Ohio State.
Hailemariam says he’ll have to figure out how and if Notre Dame can fit into that puzzle.
“That's something I guess he'll have to ponder and think about because this is late,” Hailemariam says. “They came late in the game for him as far as his process.
“But like anything else, it's about what the school does with them as opposed to the other way around. If they recruit them, then they might have a shot. I don't know what these kids want. They've just got to be in a situation that makes sense for them and his family.”
