Notre Dame dipped into Nevada on Tuesday evening to offer 2018 linebacker Brandon Kaho. The Reno (Nev.) star was caught off guard by area recruiter Brian Polian offering him the scholarship as the two had known each other previously.
“Coach Polian asked me to call them today,” Kaho told Irish Sports Daily. “We had a conversation over the phone and they offered. I had a relationship with him because he recruited me when he was at Nevada.
“It was actually a surprise. It was more of a surprise because I didn’t know Coach Polian was at Notre Dame. I knew he wasn’t at Nevada but I just wasn’t aware of where he was. It was exciting to hear where he was and to hear the news he had for me.”
The three-star prospect gave an early commitment to BYU last June and remains committed to the Cougars. However, Kaho’s verbal pledge hasn’t kept Notre Dame, Hawaii, Nevada, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington and Washington State from recruiting him.
“I am still committed to BYU but I am keeping all my options open,” stated Kaho. “I want to build a relationship with Notre Dame and see how everything goes.”
Kaho admits he doesn’t know much about Notre Dame as a university, however, he has watched the Irish on TV and is looking forward to researching more about the program.
“I don’t know much about the program,” Kaho said. “Growing up, it has always been fun to watch Notre Dame on TV. They were always on TV, but I don’t really know anything about the program so it will be interesting to learn more about Notre Dame.”
With his commitment, Kaho has a leg up on most of the 2018 class as he already knows what he wants in a program. The people are going to go a long way in deciding where he goes to school, which is something Notre Dame excels at in most recruitments.
“I just want to go somewhere I can feel comfortable,” he explained. “I want to be around good teammates and good coaches that will help me better myself. I want to be the best I can, but at the same time, I want to get a good education.
“I am not only looking at the school but the place I would be living at. The main thing is to just be around good people.”
Kaho does play multiple positions for Reno but at the next level, he will be a linebacker. BYU wants him to play outside linebacker as does Notre Dame. It’s a position Kaho takes pride in preparing to play and one he clearly has had success in playing.
“When I play the game, I am really zoned in,” stated Kaho. “I try to play the game calmly and I try to do my job the best I can. I try to not worry about what else is happening around me. I want to complete my job first and once I have my job done, then I can help or make it easier for teammates.
“I am a physical player more than a finesse player. If you have a chance to juke then juke, but I like it downhill.
“I just play as physical as I can and the rest will take care of itself.”
