The ACC Tournament has been unkind to Notre Dame over the last two seasons as Virginia Tech bounced the Irish last year following one of the worst games in the Mike Brey era in 2021 where North Carolina rolled 101-59 in Greensboro.

Tuesday night is simple. Notre Dame will need to play defense in the paint.

In the first meeting with Virginia Tech this season, Grant Basile scored 33 points and Justyn Mutts chipped in 19 points. The Irish were dominated at the rim and Basile scored 16 in six minutes in the second half. In a season of embarrassing efforts, Basile’s second half dominance was one of the worst moments for the Irish.

The good news is Nate Laszewski also scored 33 points in that game as he hit 12-of-19 shots from the field. Notre Dame will need an aggressive Laszewski if they want to advance, especially following Saturday’s performance where the Irish had just two starters in double figures.

Notre Dame has the pieces to go on a run, but it’s hard to bet on a team that couldn’t find itself during an entire regular season as the Irish finished 3-17 in ACC play. Regardless, a loss and Brey’s tenure is officially over at Notre Dame as he’ll step away from the program at the end the year.
