2025 Simeon (Ill.) defensive end Chris Burgess‍ is a name Chicago folks have highlighted in passing, but now the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder is officially on the map.

Burgess holds early offers from Akron, Illinois, Louisville, Marshall, Notre Dame, Purdue and Western Michigan and made the short trip to South Bend over the weekend.

“I liked it a lot,” Burgess told ISD. “It was one of my best visits. Notre Dame really impressed me and I think they’ll continue to impress me in the future. It was impressive. I liked Notre Dame’s facilities, the campus and I just loved it.”

Notre Dame held its third practice of the spring on Saturday and Burgess was on hand to see how the Irish went to work.

In fact, Burgess was impressed with how hard the Irish practiced.

“I liked how aggressive they were and they kept going,” said Burgess. “They were just relentless. I loved the way they practiced.”

Defensive line coach Al Washington made sure to keep Burgess close as he wanted the Chicago native to get a feel for his coaching style, but also how the unit worked.

“I think it was very beneficial,” explained Burgess. “He was giving out pointers and I listened to what he was saying to his players. He knows what he’s talking about. I think I’d fit perfectly being on the edge.”

Washington also made time to meet with Burgess and his message was a simple one.

“He was explaining how much he wanted to coach me,” Burgess stated. “He told me how much he wanted me to be one of his players.”

Burgess also spent time with Marcus Freeman as the Notre Dame head coach met with him on the field during practice.

“It was amazing to finally get to meet him,” said Burgess. "I talk to him on the phone all the time. He said he liked me a lot as a player.”

There were several top prospects from Illinois and Chicago on campus on Saturday, which is something Burgess quickly noticed as a positive.

“It was pretty amazing,” Burgess said. “Notre Dame said they recruit Chicago and you saw a lot of Chicago guys. It was awesome. Chicago football isn’t talked about a lot.”

Burgess is just starting his recruiting process, so it’s not a surprise there he doesn’t have a timetable other than he wants to make a decision before his senior season.

That said, Burgess does expect to be back on campus next month.

“I plan on going to Notre Dame’s spring game,” said Burgess.
