The last tight end Notre Dame landed from Covington Catholic High School turned alright and now there’s a new tight end from the Kentucky high school to keep an eye on.

2024 prospect Willie Rodriguez‍ made his way to South Bend this past weekend for a visit and left impressed.

He had the chance to speak with head coach Marcus Freeman as well as Gerad Parker.

“We got to watch practice,” the 6-foot-4, 238-pounder said. “I got to meet Coach Freeman at practice and he was awesome.

“Then, I talked to Coach Parker a little bit, watched the tight ends. After practice, we got to take a full campus and facility tour. Toward the end of the day we got to sit down with Coach Parker, the tight ends coach and offensive coordinator and really talk to him about what he wants to see from me and getting to know him and him getting to know us.”

Rodriguez has dozens of offers from schools like Duke, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Syracuse Indiana, Ole Miss and Pittsburgh among others. But he’s in the earlier stages of his recruitment with Parker and the Irish.

“He's going to come down and watch me this spring at my spring ball,” Rodriguez said of Parker. “He wants to see me in action.”

Rodriguez is hoping for a chance to follow in the footsteps of another Covington tight end, who helped boost his interest in Notre Dame.

“It's definitely an awesome program and one I've been watching my whole life,” he said. “Having Michael Mayer going through there was also a big part of it.

“It was really crazy to watch (Mayer at Notre Dame) and really exciting for Covington.”

An offer from the Irish would be huge for Rodriguez.

“They could definitely be at the top of my list of all the schools,” he acknowledged.

Prior to hitting South Bend, Rodriguez made stops at Penn State, Indiana, Pitt, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss and Kentucky. He has one more visit scheduled this spring, to Ohio State on Wednesday.

He’s in no rush to make a commitment.

“I'll definitely wait a little bit to make a decision toward the summer, probably sometime during the summer take a few more visits and then a decision will come later.”
