Notre Dame Could Be Fit For 2024 Safety Kingston Lopa

It doesn’t take long to see why Kingston Lopa‍ has the interest of college scouts.

“When you look at him, he's that 6-5 long safety you see,” Grant Union High School head coach Carl Reed says of the 2024 California safety.

“On the field, if you watch his film, he's a physical player. Hell, he's our best receiver as well. He's a real gifted athlete. When you see somebody that long and can run, and is actually physical too, that's a special player.”

Lopa committed to Arizona back in January, but backed off that commitment last week.

“He took an unofficial there,” Reed said of Arizona. “Great, great coaches, great relationship. He liked what he saw, but in retrospect, it was like 'I did that kind of quick and I haven't seen everything else.'

“It's a big decision. No matter how great Arizona is, which it is, it just depends on what else you see and what else you feel.”

Notre Dame is one school that has been consistently reminding him he has other options to consider.

“When they came and visited, they said they were really, really interested,” Reed said of the Irish. “Obviously, Notre Dame isn't a school that is going to just toss out offers. It means something when they come by and they offer you.”

Reed noted that Notre Dame is a school that he talked about, even before the decommitment from the Wildcats.

At this point, Lopa is still trying to regroup and decide what’s next for him. A swing of visits could come this summer.

“As far as committing, I don't know his plan is,” Reed said. “We haven't fully talked about that. It was just kind of, 'What do I do from here?'”

In addition to Notre Dame and Arizona, Lopa also has offers from schools like USC, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and Michigan among several others.

He certainly seems like a fit off the field as well.

“Good student, takes care of business in the classroom has the grades,” his coach said. “Notre Dame is after him, you've got to have it.

“Overall, he's a great kid.”
