WHAT TO WATCH
- Notre Dame was cooking at the plate and on the mound in game one as the Irish used a six-run third inning to cruise to victory on Friday night. Right fielder Brooks Coetzee led the charge as he went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and a double, but also made a massive diving catch in the field to end a Clemson threat.
Vinny Martinez continued to be productive in the DH spot as he recorded a two-run double in Notre Dame’s big third inning.
On the mound, it was another big-time performance by RHP Jackson Dennies as he went four innings giving up six hits, two runs, one walk and struck out two on 83 pitches, which was a career-high. Perhaps more importantly, Dennies pitched himself out of a couple of bases loaded jams.
Notre Dame did use two of its best relievers on Friday night as freshman RHP Caden Spivey earned his first win of his career and LHP Aidan Tyrell recorded his first save of the 2023 campaign.
- Clemson’s bullpen has been the Tigers downfall for most of the season and seven pitchers were used in game one, which could play a factor later this weekend.
Notre Dame will need to find a plan for Clemson lead-off Cam Cannarella as he also went 3-for-5 with one RBI on Friday. The freshman centerfielder is batting and incredible .418 on the season, so finding a way to get ground balls will be key to limit him.
LHP Jack Findlay on the bump is a start as it will be a left-on-left matchup against Cannarella. Pending the start by Findlay, Notre Dame will likely turn to LHP Will Mercer (4.24, 2-0) and RHP Carter Bosch (6.08, 1-1) for relief, which is a slight change as the Irish had been matching Spivey with Findlay in previous weeks.
