- The long-awaited series between Florida State and Notre Dame is finally here, which means Link Jarrett, Rich Wallace and Chuck Ristano make their way back to South Bend. Now, the series might lack some of the preseason hype given the Seminoles struggles this year, but it wouldn't be a shock to see both teams play with an edge.
Notre Dame has found its offense and has settled into a nice rhythm and there is no better example than what the Irish did last weekend by sweeping No. 8 Virginia. The Irish have also found the long ball as Notre Dame hit 10 home runs last weekend.
Grad transfer Vinny Martinez led the charge last weekend as he batted .700 with seven hits, six RBI, three runs, two doubles, and one home run. The DH spot has now been locked down and Martinez’s power has solved more than a few issues for the offense.
It will be interesting to see what happens with right fielder Brooks Coetzee, who has been dealing with a hand injury. He’s been used as a pinch runner and a few innings in the field, but he hasn’t taken an at-bat in a few games. Brady Gumpf has gotten the nod, but he’s also struggled at the plate batting .184 on the year.
The good news is Florida State has one of the worst pitching staffs in the ACC and have very little depth. If the Irish can get to the pen early, it could bode well for the series.
- Notre Dame had found its starting rotation, but the Clemson series was costly as the Irish lost starters Jackson Dennies and LHP Jack Findlay to injuries. Dennies injury has not been released to this point, while Findlay had Tommy John surgery this week.
RHP Blake Hely remains as a starter and LHP Aiden Tyrell has been promoted back into the starting rotation. Tyrell enters the weekend No. 7 in the ACC with his 2.76 ERA. Last weekend, Tyrell got his first start of the year and went six innings giving up seven hits, five runs, one walk with eight strikeouts. Hely has started to show more consistency as of late and he went 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts in Notre Dame’s 10-2 win over Virginia last weekend.
As for the game three starter, it could be the experienced Carter Bosch or freshman Caden Spivey. Bosch started game three last week and went 4.2 innings before Spivey finished off the game. Right now, it seems Spivey (2-0, 1.74) is a little more comfortable coming out of the pen and could be used to lock down game one or two if needed with Tyrell in a starting role.
All in all, it should be an interesting weekend with Jarrett’s return and Notre Dame fighting for NCAA Tournament seeding.
