- Notre Dame’s bats came alive on Saturday as the Irish scored six runs in the fourth and eight innings. The heart of the order struggled on Friday, but it came through on Saturday as Vinny Martinez went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run and Jack Penney hit a grand slam to make a strong statement.
The Irish also went 9-for-21 with runners on base and 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position, which was a welcome sight after following Friday’s two-run output.
- On the mound, Blake Hely gave up a leadoff home run and then another solo shot in the fourth, but he continued his strong season as he went 7.0 innings giving up five hits, two runs, one walk and struck out eight batters on 100 pitches.
LHP Will Mercer finished off the Seminoles going 2.0 innings and striking out two on just 24 pitches.
- Notre Dame will need its offense to come through again on Sunday and a quick start would help as Florida State’s bullpen has been its Achilles heel and Link Jarrett rolled seven pitchers to the mound on Saturday. Now, five of the seven pitchers didn’t throw for more than an inning, but the sooner Notre Dame can get to Florida State’s pen, the better.
- No starting pitchers have been announced by either team. Notre Dame started RHP grad transfer Carter Bosch last weekend on Sunday, but freshman RHP Caden Spivey has yet to pitch, so he could also be an option. However, it’s likely the Irish start Bosch and bring Spviey in to potentially finish the game.
