Notre Dame needed to hit the safety position hard in the 2024 recruiting class and on Monday, the Fighting Irish added a piece to the puzzle as Chandler (Ariz.) star Kennedy Urlacher‍ went public with his commitment.

“I told them last Wednesday,” Urlacher told ISD before his announcement. “Coach (Chad) Bowden was screaming and stuff. He was hype. Coach (Marcus) Freeman and Coach (Chris) O’Leary were pumped up. Everyone was excited.”

The 6-foot, 185-pounder knew almost immediately he wanted to join the Notre Dame program, but gave himself some time to make sure it wasn’t an impulse decision.

“I just don’t think there is a school that is going to beat out Notre Dame,” stated Urlacher. “Once I visited, I was almost 100 percent sure that’s where I wanted to go and now I’ve made my decision.”

Notre Dame beat out Miami and TCU for Urlacher’s commitment as the relationships with the Irish staff won out in the end.

“After I took my visit to Miami, I didn’t think a school would be able to beat them,” explained Urlacher. “When I got to Notre Dame, I felt it blew Miami out of the water. It was really just the coaches. I really enjoyed the coaches. I like the school and I’ll get a great education at Notre Dame, so overall, it was an easy decision.”

Urlacher’s father, Brian, an NFL Hall of Famer, gave his son advice to make academics a priority and that’s exactly what the Arizona native did.

“My dad has always told me that education should be the biggest thing for me,” Urlacher stated. “Playing big-time football was going to happen with most of my offers, but not everywhere allowed me to play big-time football and get a great education. It was really a no-brainer.”

With his commitment to Notre Dame done, Urlacher will now turn his attention to recruiting other players to South Bend and he’ll get to do that in-person on June 9th when he takes his official visit.

“I wouldn’t see a reason not to try and get more teammates,” said Urlacher. “If it’s going to benefit the team, I don’t know why I wouldn’t do it. I’ll definitely try and recruit other kids to Notre Dame.”
