Notre Dame made waves in 2018 when Mike Elston offered defensive end Alexander Ehrensberger as the massive 6-foot-7, 238-pounder hailed from Germany.

Ehrensberger committed to Notre Dame a few months later and then enrolled in June of 2020, which had its own set of complications given the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, Ehrensberger announced he would be returning to Germany following three seasons on campus and appearing in 23 games for the Fighting Irish.

Ehrensberger, who earned two degrees from Notre Dame, will attend medical school to chase his next career.

THANK YOU for the past 4 years! It has been a BLESSING.

Along with getting my degree, I have made friendships and memories that will last FOREVER.
With a heavy heart, I have made the decision to go back to Germany and start the next chapter of my life.

Thank you to everyone along this journey!! LOVE to those who have been in my corner and supported me day in day out!

Love Thee☘️
