Film Don't Lie | Teddy Rezac
This Notre Dame staff hasn’t been shy about going out on a limb with some evaluations and they didn’t hesitate to jump in with an offer for Teddy Rezac after seeing him during the May evaluation period. They quickly brought him up for a visit and that was that.
Rezac is now committed to Notre Dame as a member of the 2024 recruiting class. There’s a lot of projection with someone who isn’t playing the position in high school where Notre Dame sees him playing for them, but Rezac is a very good athlete with the kind of frame and impressive testing numbers (4.48 40 and 35.5 vertical) that Notre Dame has verified.
He’s an intriguing addition to the class as a linebacker prospect.
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 200 Projected
Position: Linebacker
ISD Grade: 89 (3-star)
National Average Grade: 87.7 (3-star)
What he does best:
Rezac got some edge to his game. He’s a physical, wrap tackler who might have the build of a receiver, but hits like a linebacker. He’s a fluid athlete who displays good change of direction.
He also flashes great potential as a blitzer and has some natural pass rush ability.
The biggest piece for me is that he has the speed to make plays in space. He can play under control and take good angles, but then accelerate and finish. It’s an absolutely critical part of playing linebacker at the college level because so much of the game is now played on the perimeter.
What he needs to improve:
He’s long and has a good frame, but his physical development will be important. It will be interesting to see how much he weighs this fall and when he ultimately reports to Notre Dame.
He’s lined up often off the edge as a linebacker and deep as a safety. It’s a different ball game with block destruction even if he’s lined up on the perimeter over a slot. That and recognition versus the inside run are going to be significant adjustments for him.
What’s his ceiling?
This type of athlete fits the mold of what is required for the position against modern day offenses. That and Rezac’s speed are why he’s an intriguing prospect.
I also think that players who would have been classified as “tweeners” like him who are now Rovers/space backers are underrated in terms of their ranking because of uncertainty about their fit.
A lot of how I view his ceiling is going to depend on how progresses during his senior season. There is no doubt that his floor as an athlete is higher than a lot of players, but the linebacker position is the most difficult position to master for a player and to project as an evaluator because fast can look slow without instincts, intelligence, and recognition.
Physically he is someone who can grow into someone similar to former Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. He was a player who I had rated much higher who was miscast as a safety early on at Texas, but converted into a linebacker and eventually developed into an impact second level defender later in his career.
